I'm not a supporter of Obama, but the man does have a thing for lasers, and I can't argue with that. Obama recently released a list of "earmark" projects that he has slipped into spending bills, and lasers for the military are on his radar.
Obama and friends locked up $1,950,000 for the U.S. military's Compact Tactical Laser program. If you're wondering what this is about, just imagine a science fiction scene with guys running around with laser weapons and you will get the picture. These funds will be used to "enable the scaling and aggregation of a large number of diode lasers so as to increase the optical power and brightness that is delivered by means of fiber optic coupling."
Obama also tried to secure $4,800,000 for lasers that can heal. the military wants to conduct more research into LED's that may be able to heal wounds and build muscles.
I may not be rooting for the man, but I hope his love of lasers catches on in Congress!
