Dermatologists have been using lasers for years now for scars, wrinkles, and several skin conditions. When it was shown that high doses of UV lights may lead to cancer, many doctors began looking to lasers for acne treatment. Since lasers are so appealing for treating acne (no creams, easy, may last longer), it's no wonder that their use has exploded over the last decade. As appealing as acne laser therapy is, we still need to ask if it is really effective.Let's begin by discussing what laser therapy for acne does. The dermatologist will wave a device that looks like a wand around the area that has acne (usually the face). The device emits about 400 laser pulses. The entire procedure usually lasts for ten minutes. Most patients feel no real pain, while some feel a small stinging sensation. The medical laser may cause redness in the treated area that could last a few hours.
Whether acne laser therapy is really effective or not is a bit of a mystery right now. One scientific study looked at patients over a 12 week period and found no real results from the lasers. Another study reported noticeable improvements in the acne patients. It is largely accepted that lasers can improve scars caused by acne, but it appears that we have no solid proof that lasers can prevent acne from occurring in the first place.
Have you had acne treatments with lasers? If so, would you mind sharing your experiences here? I would really appreciate it, and perhaps others could benefit from your thoughts and experiences.
